Luisa Fernanda

Luisa FernandaThe season opens on November 12, 2011, with Federico Moreno Torroba’s zarzuela Luisa Fernanda. Zarzuela, a popular Spanish form of musical theater, incorporates both spoken dialogue and singing. Luisa Fernanda takes place during the republican-monarchist conflicts of 1868, during which the heroine finds herself in a romantic triangle with Javier, a dashing young army officer, and Vidal, a wealthy landowner. Luisa Fernanda is a co-production of Florida Grand Opera and SaludArte Foundation and will be conducted by Pablo Mielgo and directed by Emilio Sagi. Soprano Amparo Navarro stars in the title role, with Antonio Gandia as Javier and Àngel Òdena as Vidal.

La rondine

La rondineThe season continues with FGO’s first production of Puccini’s La rondine. Meaning “the swallow,” La rondine refers to a prediction made early in the opera that although the heroine, Magda, may spread her wings in search of love and romance, she will return to the place and life that she knows. This production will feature soprano Elizabeth Caballero, FGO Young Artist and bass-baritone Craig Colclough as Rambaldo, and Corinne Winters as Lisette. Newly appointed FGO Music Director Ramon Tebar conducts and Nicola Bowie returns to direct the production.

Rigoletto

RigolettoOne of the world’s best-loved operas, Verdi’s Rigoletto is the story of a court jester who enables the Duke’s philandering and mocks the husbands and fathers of the victims. When he finds his own daughter, whom he has kept a well hidden secret, to be the Duke’s newest victim, he tries to repay evil with evil, and it goes horribly wrong. FGO’s Young Artist Studio shines in this production with several former members taking the stage. These include West Palm Beach native Nadine Sierra as Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda and Jeff Buchman as director. Michael Fabiano joins the cast as the Duke of Mantua along with FGO Resident Conductor Andrew Bisantz.

Roméo et Juliette

Romeo & JulietteThe final production of the season will be Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, not seen at FGO since 2004. Of the many operatic treatments of Shakespeare’s play, Gounod’s has been the most enduring, with its perfect depiction of the unrestrained passion of youth, and the bitter tragedy visited on the rival Capulet and Montague families. Mexican Soprano María Alejandres returns to FGO as Juliette and is joined by French tenor Sébastien Guèze as Roméo. Joseph Mechavich makes his FGO debut at conductor, and David Lefkowich makes his FGO main stage debut as stage director.
